Around 50 migrants feared dead after boat sinks in central Mediterranean
According to Malta’s Armed Forces, one man was rescued from the sea by a cargo vessel off the coast of Tunisia on Friday and was later transported to Malta for medical treatment.
Alarm Phone, an independent organisation that supports migrants attempting to reach the European Union by sea, said authorities had confirmed the rescue of a single survivor. The survivor reported that about 50 people did not survive the crossing.
“Authorities confirm that one survivor was rescued to Malta. According to him, 50 people did not survive. The people departed from Tunisia and spent 24 hours in the water,” Alarm Phone said in a post on X.
Last week, the group reported that approximately 150 migrants had gone missing in the central Mediterranean after at least three boats departed from Tunisia. It remains unclear whether the vessel involved in the latest incident was among those reported missing.
The central Mediterranean route remains one of the world’s deadliest migration corridors, with shipwrecks frequently reported amid dangerous sea conditions and overcrowded vessels.
