A new Independent Authority tasked with tackling profiteering in the market is set to begin operations in 2026, according to Secretary General of Commerce and Consumer Protection Sotiris Anagnostopoulos.
The Authority will bring together multiple existing control bodies to boost coordination and effectiveness. Equipped with modern digital tools—including mobile apps for submitting complaints—it aims to enable faster responses and evidence collection, even without on-site inspections.
Anagnostopoulos noted that the Authority will also have the power to impose fines and will expand its oversight to tourist areas, where incidents of overcharging in services like taxis are frequently reported.
