Construction sector in Greece sees sharp decline in January 2025

Looking at the 12-month period from February 2024 to January 2025, the total construction activity, both private and public, saw the issuance of 30,631 permits.
The year 2025 has begun on a downward note for the construction sector in Greece, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). Figures reveal that there is a noticeable decline in construction activity across various metrics, including the number of permits issued, surface area, and volume.
Specifically, in January 2025, the total construction activity—covering both private and public sectors—showed a significant drop. A total of 1,762 building permits were issued, corresponding to 288,063 square meters of surface area and 1,260,482 cubic meters in volume. This represented a 17% decrease in the number of permits, a 37% drop in surface area, and a 38.2% reduction in volume compared to the same month in 2024.
Private sector construction permits accounted for 1,746 of the total issued in January 2025, covering 282,535 square meters and 1,234,455 cubic meters. These figures reflected a 17.3% decline in the number of permits, a 37.2% drop in surface area, and a 38.4% reduction in volume compared to January 2024.
Public sector construction, on the other hand, accounted for only 16 permits, covering 5,528 square meters of surface area and 26,027 cubic meters in volume. Public construction represented just 2.1% of the total building volume in January 2025.
Looking at the 12-month period from February 2024 to January 2025, the total construction activity, both private and public, saw the issuance of 30,631 permits, corresponding to 7,114,222 square meters in surface area and 31,219,130 cubic meters in volume. This marked a 12.4% increase in the number of permits, a 13% increase in surface area, and a 6.4% rise in volume compared to the previous 12-month period.
Private construction during the same period saw a 12.3% increase in the number of permits, a 12.7% rise in surface area, and a 5.3% increase in volume when compared to the previous year. Public sector construction accounted for 3.4% of the total building volume during this period.
