Heavy rain triggers floods in southern Bulgaria
Severe rainfall in southern Bulgaria has caused flooding in Koşukavak (Krumovgrad), in the Kırcaali province, prompting a state of emergency in 26 settlements, local authorities said.
The Krumovitsa River reached near-critical levels after 108 liters of rain per square meter fell in a single night, Koshukavak Mayor Sebiha Mehmed said.
The storm triggered multiple landslides, destroyed a bridge, wiped out a 13-meter section of road, and flooded agricultural land.
Pumping stations in the town center were also submerged, raising concerns that drinking water could become unavailable from Friday.
No casualties have been reported so far. Authorities said emergency teams are on alert, village leaders have been warned, and schools will close for one day due to continued rainfall.
