UN raises human rights concerns over protests across Europe
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed concern over reports of unnecessary and excessive force against protesters, including children, during mass demonstrations in Albania, Belgium, France, Italy and Portugal.
UN calls for investigations into excessive force
In a statement, Türk said the protests across the five European countries had raised human rights concerns and condemned all acts of violence.
He called on all parties to reduce tensions and prevent further violence, stressing that inclusive and safe dialogue was the best way forward.
Türk emphasized that people have the right to protest peacefully and make their voices heard, adding that governments must facilitate the exercise of these rights.
He also stressed that any law enforcement response must be lawful, necessary and proportionate.
Governments urged to engage with protesters
Türk called for prompt, effective and independent investigations into allegations of unlawful use of force, emphasizing the importance of accountability and effective remedies for victims.
Acknowledging steps taken by some authorities to investigate incidents and ease tensions, he urged governments to engage with protesters, particularly young people, through meaningful, inclusive and constructive dialogue.
