Trump: “Israel will lose all U.S. support if it annexes the West Bank”
In an interview with Time magazine, Trump commented on the recent vote in the Israeli parliament regarding the West Bank.
When asked what would happen if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government took steps toward annexation, Trump responded:
“That’s not going to happen. It’s not going to happen because I made promises to Arab countries. You can’t do that now. If something like this happens, Israel will lose all support from the United States.”
U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who had just concluded his visit to Israel, also addressed the issue at the airport.
Vance said that the preliminary approval of the annexation bill in parliament while he was in Israel was “an insult” and “a stupid move,” adding that the Trump administration’s policy was firmly opposed to such an action.
The bill proposing the annexation of illegal Jewish settlements built on confiscated Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank passed its preliminary vote in the Knesset on Wednesday with a slim majority — 25 lawmakers voting in favor and 24 against.
The proposal must pass three more readings in parliament before becoming law.
