Trump administration probe targets Omar’s citizenship, report says
The Trump administration’s investigation into Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota is aimed at building a case to revoke her US citizenship and potentially deport her, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing US officials and people familiar with the matter.
The investigation is examining how Omar obtained US citizenship after arriving in the United States from Somalia, as well as matters involving her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, according to the report.
Mohamed brought Omar and other family members to the United States from a refugee camp in Kenya in 1995, the newspaper reported.
Federal agents search Omar’s home
Federal agents searched Omar’s residence in Washington, DC, early Monday as part of what the Justice Department described as an ongoing federal criminal investigation.
Investigators seized several items, including Omar’s cellphone, notebooks, personal computers and passport, according to people familiar with the search cited by the Journal.
Omar and her husband were the only people at home during the operation, the report said.
Authorities have also issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to some of Omar’s relatives, seeking testimony before a federal grand jury in Minnesota, a person familiar with the proceedings told the newspaper.
Omar accuses administration of targeting political opponents
Omar criticized the search, accusing the Trump administration of using federal law enforcement to intimidate its political opponents.
“Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote on X on Monday, confirming that she was safe and adding, “I will not be silenced.”
The search took place approximately three weeks before the US midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking re-election.
The reported investigation has focused on Omar’s immigration history and family records. The publicly described details do not establish that her citizenship will be revoked or that she will be deported.
