Zeybek: The only real Solution for Xanthi Minority School is a New, modern building

Xanthi MP Hüseyin Zeybek has strongly criticized the Greek Education Ministry’s recent announcement of a €37,000 flooring project for the Xanthi Minority Middle and High School, calling it a superficial measure that fails to address the school’s deep-rooted structural problems.

In a sharply worded statement, Zeybek compared the move to “giving an aspirin to a cancer patient,” and emphasized that the only meaningful and lasting solution is the construction of a new school building that meets modern safety and educational standards.

“After repeated parliamentary interventions, written questions, and appeals to the Ministry of Education, the Ministry has finally decided to ‘remember’ the existence of the Minority Middle and High School of Xanthi,” Zeybek said. “However, it has again opted for a careless and inadequate approach.”

The Ministry’s announced intervention involves the installation of special flooring on wooden surfaces. Zeybek warned that such cosmetic measures do nothing to solve the serious dangers posed by the building’s aging infrastructure, including statical risks, structural weaknesses, and severe damage caused by weather conditions.

He invited Minister Zaharaki to personally visit the school and witness its poor condition firsthand, noting that students and teachers continue to work in unsafe and degrading environments.

“Instead of promoting a non-solution, the Ministry should honestly admit that what students, teachers, and the minority community truly need is a new, safe, and fully equipped school complex,” he added. “The €37,000 spent on superficial repairs could end up being wasted taxpayer money.”

Zeybek reiterated that any accident resulting from the building’s known safety issues would be the full responsibility of the Ministry, as detailed warnings had already been issued.

“Real politics is not about pre-election performances, but about responsibility and action,” he said. “The only solution for the Xanthi Minority Middle and High School is the construction of a modern school in line with today’s educational and safety standards. Everything else is an attempt to put makeup on a deeply rooted problem.”
