Xanthi Minority Middle and High School building dispute: Authorities pass the buck

The debate over a new building for the Xanthi Minority Middle and High School has sparked criticism, as responsible authorities blame one another for the issue.
Mayor's Statement
During the Xanthi Municipal Council meeting on December 19, Mayor Stratos Kontos responded to opposition member Manolis Fanourakis's question regarding recent reports on the school's request for a new building. Mayor Kontos clarified:
"Minority schools are not under the jurisdiction of the Xanthi Municipality but are entirely the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. Therefore, the matter must be addressed to the Ministry."
Conflicting Responses
The Minority School's Governing Committee and Parent-Teacher Association had previously submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Education. In response, a Ministry official stated via email that the matter fell under the jurisdiction of the Xanthi Municipality, contradicting the Mayor's claims.
Renewed Criticism
This contradictory exchange has reignited criticism over the apparent lack of accountability and coordination between the Municipality and the Ministry of Education, leaving the school's building needs unresolved.
The Minority School remains in limbo as calls grow louder for a definitive resolution to this ongoing issue.
