The Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board (BTTADK) has issued a statement commemorating January 29 – National Resistance and Solidarity Day, which symbolizes the struggles of the Western Thrace Turks against the denial of their Turkish identity and the injustices they have faced.

"January 29 – National Resistance and Solidarity Day"
For the Western Thrace Turkish community, January 29 is not just another date; it is the emblem of our resistance and rightful struggle. This day marks a turning point in which the flame of our cause has never extinguished, proving that we have never bowed in the face of adversity.

The events of 1988 demonstrated to the world how the Western Thrace Turks stood united in their pursuit of rights, freedom, and justice. The voice we raised against exclusion, restrictions on our beliefs, and the denial of our identity still echoes in our hearts today. That day was not only about claiming our rights but also about fighting for our very existence.

However, January 29, 1990, took on a tragic dimension as our community became the target of organized attacks in Komotini and Xanthi. Western Thrace Turks faced grave threats to their property and safety, as shops, homes, and workplaces were systematically attacked. This dark day served as a painful reminder of the heavy price we have paid for our rights and freedoms. Yet, rather than breaking us, these attacks only strengthened our determination.

Despite the passage of many years, our wounds remain unhealed, and our issues are far from resolved. Challenges in education, religious freedoms, and the recognition of our associations continue to overshadow our rightful demand for equal citizenship.

January 29 is not just about remembering the past but also about proclaiming that our struggle continues today. This date stands as a testament to our unwavering solidarity, loyalty to our identity, and relentless pursuit of justice.

Now, more than ever, it is time to stand united. On this significant day, we raise our voices louder against those who seek to silence us, calling for peace, equality, and justice. We aspire to build a brighter future for our children—a future where we can live freely, embracing our identity without fear.

As Western Thrace Turks, we reaffirm our commitment to continue our struggle with hope and determination. January 29 is not just a date—it is a symbol of the resilience that has taken root in this land.

We honor and pay tribute to all our compatriots who have taken part in this struggle.
