Topsidis: Serious and οngoing water flow problem in Ardas River

The Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Christodoulos Topsidis, has raised alarm over the worsening water flow situation in the Ardas River, calling it a “serious and ongoing issue” that threatens agricultural production in the region.

In an official statement aimed at “restoring the facts and responsibly informing the public,” Topsidis stressed that reduced water flow from Bulgaria has brought the water level at the Therapio dam below the critical 2.5-meter mark. This has rendered irrigation systems inoperable and left local farmers struggling to sustain their crops.

Although the water level slightly increased to 2.65 meters in recent days, the governor warned that the situation remains unstable and far from resolved.

Topsidis has personally briefed Deputy Foreign Minister Haris Theocharis on the severity of the crisis, underlining the need for “continuous monitoring and real solutions, not just reassurances.” He added that he remains in daily contact with the Ministries of Environment & Energy and Foreign Affairs to push for immediate interventions.

“The farmers of Evros (Meriç) are not alone. I have been, am, and will remain by their side—not with words, but with action,” Topsidis said, emphasizing that “the farmers’ struggle is a shared struggle for all of us.”
