SYRIZA-PS Xanthi condemns the degradation of railways and regional exclusion

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance (SYRIZA-PS) in Xanthi has strongly criticized the government’s systematic neglect of Greece’s railway network, following the decision by Hellenic Train to shut down ticket offices at various stations, including in Xanthi.
Concerns Over Railway Deterioration
In an official statement, SYRIZA-PS condemned the closure of railway ticket offices between January 31 and March 31, describing it as part of a wider strategy of abandoning the railway infrastructure in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The party argued that since the suspension of train services in the region in 2019, government inaction has led to the railway’s complete decline.
The decision to eliminate ticket offices not only worsens transportation issues—especially for elderly passengers and people with disabilities—but also results in the loss of 200 jobs, affecting families who depend on them.
SYRIZA-PS further accused the Mitsotakis government of deliberately undermining the railway system as an affordable and efficient mode of transport, stating that this neglect harms local economies and hinders regional development.
A Sharp Critique
The statement concluded with a pointed remark:
"Under their rule, we lost the train. Both literally and metaphorically."
