The regional authority of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has decided to postpone the reopening of schools due to Storm Atena, it was announced on Tuesday.

The authority stated that, due to hazardous weather conditions, the reopening of schools after the summer vacation will be delayed by one day, from Wednesday to Thursday.

Storm Atena has been sweeping through the country since Monday night and is expected to continue until Wednesday, with the western, central, and northern mainland areas, as well as the northern and eastern Aegean islands, likely to be the most severely affected.

Earlier on Tuesday, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias noted that the possibility of local flooding caused by the storm cannot be ruled out.

“This is not a summer instability but an autumn weather system. This means the adverse conditions will persist longer, making local flooding a possibility,” he said, following an extensive briefing from the Risk Assessment Committee.
