'No to the Refugee Center' say metropolitans for "national reasons"

Four metropolitans in Western Thrace declared that they oppose the Evros (Meriç) Temporary Refugee Admission Center for "national reasons".

Damaskinos, Metropolitan of Didimoteichon, Orestiada, and Soufli; Panteleimon, Metropolitan of Xanthi and its Region; Anthimos, Metropolitan of Alexandroupoli; and Panteleimon, Metropolitan of Maronia, Komotini sent the letter they prepared jointly to Prime Minister Mitsotakis.

Four metropolitans expressed their opposition for 'national reasons' to the renovation and expansion of the Evros Temporary Refugee Admission Center.

Expressing their opposition to any move to be made for this purpose, not only in Evros but within the borders of Western Thrace, for "national reasons", they stated that they had expressed their views on the same subject before and they renewed it today.

In the letter signed by 4 metropolitans and sent to Prime Minister Mitsotakis, it was stated that especially Thrace is a sensitive region in terms of nationality, and that they have been and will continue to express their opinions freely for years on immigration policy as well as on other issues.

In the letter reminding that they openly declared that they were against the expansion and enlargement of the Evros Temporary Refugee Reception Center for "national reasons" in the teleconference held with the Minister of Immigration in the past, the metropolitans of Thrace stated that the ideas they declared that day are repeated today.

4 priests also reminded that all units of the people and the state should contribute to the establishment of dialogue and harmony in the region.

At the end of the letter, it was added that “It should not be forgotten that the unity and solidarity of the people and the determination of the official state prevented our neighbor from using these people as a means of destabilization in our region".
