The invasive silver-cheeked toadfish, commonly known as the pufferfish, has not been detected in the waters of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EM-TH), according to local fishermen in the Municipality of Avdira of Xathni.

Speaking to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, fishermen’s association president Nikos Broukelis said there have been no sightings of the species in the coastal areas of Northern Greece, easing concerns about its spread into the region.

Blue crab population remains challenge for fishermen

Broukelis, however, highlighted the growing presence of another invasive species, the blue crab, which has become a challenge for local fishermen due to its increasing population.

Despite its impact on fishing activities, he noted that the species is not dangerous and can be commercially harvested and consumed. Fishermen have proposed measures to control its population, while also promoting its inclusion in local gastronomy as a marketable seafood product.

Calls for greater support and investment

Local fishermen complained of insufficient support from state authorities and local governments and called for a meeting with Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Fisheries Adviser Antonis Frantzis.

Frantzis said he intends to meet with fishing communities in the region and expressed concern over the declining number of fishermen’s organizations, with active groups mainly remaining in Porto Lagos, Alexandroupoli and Kavala.

He also said a major project to upgrade lagoon infrastructure is currently under review and could receive European Union funding. Authorities are additionally seeking inclusion in a separate €500,000 EU-funded program aimed at promoting fisheries products from Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, home to one of Greece’s richest fishing grounds.

Studies planned for Vistonida Lake and Nestos River

Frantzis also announced plans for a new study on Lake Vistonida to identify areas suitable for sustainable, low-impact economic activities.

A similar planning initiative is expected to be carried out along the Nestos River as part of broader efforts to support environmental management and regional development.
