A new wind energy investment is moving forward in Xanthi, northeastern Greece, following the approval of environmental terms and restrictions for its construction and operation.
New wind farm project advances in Xanthi — Location and details revealed

The project concerns the development of a 42 MW wind power station at the “Manetas” site within the administrative boundaries of the Stavroupoli municipal unit, in the Municipality of Xanthi, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It also includes associated infrastructure works such as access roads, electrical interconnections, and the construction of a new 33/150kV substation on a 10,000-square-meter plot located along the route of the existing 150kV “Serres–Iasmos” transmission line.

The project is being developed by DAMCO ENERGY S.A.

Project Overview
The wind farm will consist of seven VESTAS V150 wind turbines, each with a nominal power of 6.0 MW. The turbines will feature three-blade rotors with a diameter of 150 meters and a tower height of 125 meters. The total installed and maximum output capacity will be 42 MW, as confirmed by the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE).

The turbines will be installed within a polygonal area covering approximately 1.4 million square meters (1,406,857 m²).

Supporting Infrastructure
The project also includes several critical supporting works:

  • Road Construction: Opening of new forest roads (routes 1–8) with a total length of 8,322.76 meters.
  • Stormwater Management: Installation of drainage channels and culverts to manage rainwater runoff.
  • Turbine Assembly Areas: Creation of level assembly platforms for turbine erection, totaling 34,265.46 m². These will serve as work areas for component assembly and crane operations.
  • Control Center: Installation of a prefabricated control building north of turbine 1, with a footprint of 22 m² (7.57 × 2.9 m). This facility will house electrical equipment, a remote monitoring system, and storage space.

Electrical Interconnection
The internal electrical network will connect the turbines via 7,272.45 meters of underground medium-voltage (MV) cable, leading to the control building. The wind farm will connect to the national transmission grid through a new substation built on a 10,000 m² plot located along the “Serres–Iasmos” 150kV transmission corridor. The external MV network connecting the wind farm to the substation will also be underground and is estimated to be 16,138.87 meters long.

The new 33/150kV step-up substation will support the integration of the wind farm into the grid and help facilitate the region's transition toward renewable energy.
