New roundabout in Bulustra nears completion, boosting road safety

Construction of a new roundabout at the junction of Provincial Road 9 and Provincial Road 8 in Bulustra (Abdera) is progressing steadily, with regional authorities aiming to significantly improve road safety and traffic flow toward Bulustra and the coastal area.

According to the project timeline, construction officially began on September 15, 2025. While work has reached an advanced stage, several more days are required to complete the asphalt paving, which depends on sufficiently high temperatures to ensure proper laying and compaction.

Detours Cause Inconvenience, but Serve a Purpose

To facilitate construction, traffic through the junction has been suspended and diverted via alternative routes through Mandra, Karapazar (Pezoula), and Kalfalar (Myrodato). This decision has caused understandable inconvenience for local residents and wintertime inhabitants of the coastal zone, many of whom closely monitor the project’s daily progress.

Some residents have noted that weather conditions so far have been favorable and believe the works could have advanced more quickly. Nevertheless, authorities stress that the detours are necessary to ensure both construction quality and worker safety.

Advanced Stage, Completion Expected Within a Month

Despite public perceptions of delay, the project is now in its final phases. With crews working on a daily basis and weather conditions remaining favorable, the roundabout is expected to be completed in less than one month.

A Critical Project for Preventing Traffic Accidents

The intersection has long been considered one of the most dangerous points in the area, with frequent traffic accidents attributed to several factors, including:

  • High vehicle speeds along the straight stretch of Provincial Road 9
  • Limited visibility toward intersecting roads
  • Increased traffic toward Bulustra and nearby beaches during the summer months
  • Driver inattention and underestimation of the junction’s risks

Internationally, roundabouts are regarded as one of the most effective measures for reducing road accidents. They:

  • Enforce lower vehicle speeds
  • Guide traffic flow naturally
  • Reduce the likelihood of head-on and side-impact collisions
  • Improve overall visibility and traffic circulation

In simple terms, the new roundabout is not merely an infrastructure upgrade, but a long-term investment in safety and quality of life for drivers and residents of the region.
