MP Özgür Ferhat raises personnel shortages in Rodopi Veterinary Services
MP Özgür Ferhat of the New Left Parliamentary Group, along with fellow MPs, submitted a parliamentary question to the Ministers of Agriculture and Interior regarding the severe shortage of veterinary personnel in the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region, particularly in Rodopi.
The MPs warned that this shortage hinders efforts to manage serious outbreaks of diseases such as sheep pox and plague among livestock. The contracts of temporary staff hired under a four-month contract in November 2024 are set to expire on 21 April 2025, raising concerns about further strain on services.
The temporary personnel had helped ensure the timely payment of compensation to farmers and supported outbreak control efforts. The MPs stressed that failing to extend their contracts could disrupt these critical operations.
The MPs asked the following:
- Will the contracts of temporary staff expiring on 21 April be extended immediately?
- Is a fast-track hiring process outside of ASEP (the public hiring authority) planned for new temporary personnel?
- Are there plans to assign permanent veterinary and administrative staff to the region through ASEP?
