MP Hüseyin Zeybek calls for action on growing pufferfish problem
New Left Party MP Hüseyin Zeybek has submitted a parliamentary question seeking answers regarding measures to address the growing presence of invasive pufferfish in Greek waters.
Zeybek highlighted concerns raised by fishermen and coastal communities about the environmental and economic impact of the species, which has expanded across parts of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. The fish is considered harmful to marine ecosystems and poses challenges to local fishing activities.
The lawmaker called on the relevant ministries to clarify what actions are being taken to protect fishermen, support affected communities, and limit the spread of the species.
The issue has attracted increasing attention in recent months as authorities examine possible incentive schemes for fishermen to remove pufferfish from affected waters and reduce their impact on marine biodiversity.
