In a parliamentary question directed to Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Kostas Çiaras, Ferhat highlighted the significant losses that tobacco farmers have suffered this year due to extreme heat and drought, emphasizing the urgent need for financial aid.

This year, tobacco production in the Rodopi region has decreased by 30%. Coupled with stagnant tobacco prices that have remained unchanged for 25 years and rising production costs—such as fuel, fertilizer, and agricultural chemicals—farmers find themselves in a dire situation. Moreover, state subsidies for tobacco farmers have decreased by 85% over the years, further exacerbating the economic strain.

Ferhat submitted the following questions to Minister Tsiaras:

Will the Ministry of Agriculture act to support tobacco farmers through De Minimis funds?
Is the Ministry considering planning the subsidies per acre, taking into account the current economic conditions of the farmers?
What other measures is the Ministry planning to ensure the continuation of tobacco farming and to protect the economic sustainability of the region’s farmers?
Ferhat stressed the critical importance of tobacco farming for the Rodopi region and called for immediate action to ensure the livelihood of the farmers. He stated, "I will do everything in my power to ensure our tobacco farmers are not left behind and receive the urgent support they need. I will continue to work to resolve the current issues and secure the future of tobacco farming."

The MP reiterated his commitment to supporting the people of Rodopi and pledged to closely monitor the situation as it develops.
