Meriç remaains on ‘Red Code’ alert as floodwaters continue to rise

Residents of Lavara endured another difficult night, with the area on high alert due to fears that water levels could increase and reach residential zones. Severe flooding has affected Mandra, Lavara, Amorio and Dimetoka dymoteicho, causing extensive damage to farmland, rural infrastructure and parts of local communities that remain submerged.

The municipalities of Dimetoka (Didymoteicho) and Sofulu (Soufli) are under significant pressure, along with southern parts of the regional unit, particularly in Petalo, Pythio and Tychero, where water levels are especially high.

Authorities are urging residents to stay away from rivers, embankments and other high-risk areas, warning that conditions remain dangerous and unpredictable. All emergency services will stay on heightened alert for at least another 24 hours, working continuously to reinforce vulnerable points and prevent floodwaters from entering settlements.

In the area outside Lavara, water levels have reached seven meters, creating a critical situation. The northern junction has been closed, as emergency teams focus on stopping water from reaching the village.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has extended the maximum mobilization “Red Code” status for Meriç (Evros), citing the sustained pressure from flooding and the high risk of further escalation.
