Greece issues Red Alert as severe storms hit several areas
Authorities have placed several regions on Red Code alert for Saturday as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to bring strong winds, frequent lightning and possible local hail.
The Risk Assessment Committee met under the chairmanship of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evangelos Tournas following warnings from the National Meteorological Service (EMY).
Scientists said the severe weather will mainly affect eastern and southern parts of the country, with particularly intense conditions expected in central and northern Evia and the northern and northeastern Aegean islands, including Thasos, Limnos and Samothrace.
Regions under Red Code alert
The Civil Protection authorities issued the highest level of mobilisation for:
* Magnesia and the Sporades in Thessaly
* Evia in Central Greece
* Thasos and Evros (including Samothrace) in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace
* Limnos in the North Aegean
Several of these areas were also under Red Code alert on Friday, including Attica, Thessaloniki, Pieria, Imathia, Halkidiki, Larissa, Magnesia, Central Greece, Thasos, Evros and Limnos.
Authorities urged residents and visitors to remain cautious and follow official weather and civil protection instructions as storms continue.
