Mayor of Topeiros appeals for support to livestock farmers affected by disease outbreak
In a formal letter dated January 16, 2025, Mayor Thomas Michoglou of Topeiros addressed the Prime Minister, the President of Parliament, relevant Ministers, MPs from Xanthi, and political party representatives. The letter highlighted the severe economic challenges faced by local livestock farmers following a devastating outbreak of sheep and goat pox, which led to significant losses in livestock.
Citing the integral role of livestock farming in the local economy, the Municipality of Topeiros emphasized the urgency of implementing robust support measures. The municipal council had previously passed resolution 111/2024 to advocate for these farmers.
The letter outlined key demands:
Immediate compensation for affected farmers without requiring tax and insurance clearances.
Financial support programs for livestock restoration.
Tax relief and subsidies for production units.
Suspension of tax and insurance obligations.
Access to national and EU funds to restore damages and ensure sustainability.
Strengthening veterinary services to enhance disease prevention and control.
Funding for the purchase of unaffected animal feed and compensation for damaged stock.
Economic support for students from impacted families.
Mayor Michoglou called for decisive action to address this crisis and support the recovery of Topeiros’ livestock sector.
