İskeçe marks 107th anniversary of its liberation with ceremonies and parade
The 107th anniversary of İskeçe’s (Xanthi) liberation on October 4, 1919, was commemorated with official ceremonies and a parade attended by government and military officials, students, cultural associations and residents.
The celebrations culminated in a student and military parade, which was watched by large crowds in the city. Students, cultural associations, volunteers and members of the Greek Armed Forces took part in the procession.
Military aircraft also conducted a flyover over İskeçe as part of the commemorations.
OFFICIALS HIGHLIGHT İSKEÇE’S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Deputy Minister of National Defence Athanasios Davakis described October 4, 1919, as a “turning point” for İskeçe, referring to the city as a “national stronghold” of Thrace.
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis said passing the region’s history on to younger generations was a “sacred duty.”
Topsidis also stressed the importance of regional development, encouraging young people to remain in the area and highlighting the need to protect Greece’s borders.
The 107th-anniversary commemorations concluded following the parade.
