İskeçe Bar Association declares full-day strike on February 28

The İskeçe Bar Association has announced that its members will go on a full-day strike on Friday, February 28, 2025. This decision follows the resolution of the Coordination Committee of the Presidents of the Hellenic Bar Association on February 12, 2025. The strike marks the second anniversary of the Tempi train disaster, aiming to honor the victims and raise awareness about the need for a transparent justice process.

In its statement, the Bar Association emphasized that the Tempi train crash deeply impacted Greek society and must not be forgotten. It reiterated that the legal community has consistently supported transferring the case to an appellate judge for thorough investigation and ensuring justice is served.

The announcement underscored the importance of an independent judiciary, free from external interference, and condemned personal attacks on judges. It reaffirmed that justice is a pillar of society and must function impartially.

Scope of the Strike and Exceptions
During the strike, most legal procedures will be suspended, but exceptions have been made for the following urgent matters:

  • Legal procedures facing imminent statute-of-limitations deadlines
  • Emergency court hearings and interim measure requests
  • Certain criminal cases (e.g., cases involving long-term detainees, appeals, or decisions requiring immediate enforcement)
  • Urgent applications to prevent the deportation of migrants

Other legal services, including the filing of lawsuits, court appearances, submission of petitions, and notary-certified declarations, will be suspended throughout the strike.

Call for Justice
The İskeçe Bar Association called for an independent and impartial judicial process, stressing the importance of uncovering those responsible for the Tempi tragedy. The statement also highlighted that legal efforts will continue to hold accountable those responsible for the disaster.

The strike is part of a broader movement, with other bar associations across Greece expected to take similar action in solidarity.
