In the statement made by the ITB, it was emphasized that January 29 is the day of honor for the Turks of Western Thrace, who raised their voices against injustice, oppression and the denial of Turkish identity.
It was emphasized that the mind that denied the national identity of the Western Thrace Turks exactly 34 years ago, ignores the minority rights that are under the guarantee of international law today and continues unlawful practices 34 years later.
In the statement of the ITB, it was stated:
“We are living another January 29, which is almost a milestone for the Western Thrace Turkish Minority. It has been 34 years since January 29, 1988, when Western Thrace Turks raised their voices and shouted against injustice and discriminatory practices.
January 29; is the honor day of the Turkish people of Western Thrace, who say 'NO' to injustice, discrimination, oppression, and denial of Turkish identity, and fight for their democratic rights. It is a milestone in which Western Thrace Turks say 'stop' to the anti-democratic mind that does not want or accepts them and treats them as second-class citizens. January 29 is the honor day of the Western Thrace Turks who struggle against injustice and oppression.
The mind that denied the national identity of Western Thrace Turks exactly 34 years ago, ignores minority rights, which are under the guarantee of international law, still unlawful practices 34 years later. The Western Thrace Turks, who made their voices heard in the country they live in and to the whole world, by saying "enough is enough" to injustices, oppressions, and anti-democratic practices on January 29, 1988, unfortunately, continues to be exposed to injustices. It continues to deal with practices that are far from law and democracy.
The Western Thrace Turkish Minority gained basic citizenship rights to a great extent thanks to January 29 and its democratic struggles. However, 34 years have passed since January 29, 1988, there has not been the slightest improvement in the collective rights of the minority community. Unfortunately, new ones have been added to existing problems.
"The injustices against the minority continue, the Western Thrace Turks who talk about the usurpation of their rights and injustice are being 'marginalized' and 'targeted'. Unfortunately, after 34 years, Western Thrace Turks are again faced with injustices, practices far from law and democracy.”
"The decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, which are closely related to the Western Thrace Muslim Turkish Community, are still not implemented, the injustices against the minorities continue, the Western Thrace Turks who talk about the usurpation of rights and injustice are 'othered' and 'targeted'. Unfortunately, after 34 years, Western Thrace Turks are faced with injustices, practices far from law and democracy. In this context, although 14 years have passed since the ECHR's positive decision in favor of the Xanthi Turkish Union, the Greek state still does not implement this decision and the ECHR decisions regarding the Turkish minority.
Problems such as minority education, mufti offices, foundations, denial of Turkish identity, deprived Western Thrace Turks, ECHR decisions regarding Turkish minority continue as they were 34 years ago, and new ones are added to these problems. Especially in recent years, the economic backwardness of the Western Thrace Turkish Society, which is a result of the unfair and oppressive practices of the past, has been deepening and increasing. The country's administration, on the other hand, continues to be blind and deaf to the demands that will remedy the minority problems and the economic and social backwardness of our society.
As Xanthi Turkish Union, we commemorate our elders who fought for our CASE and passed away to eternity, and we respectfully commemorate the January 29 Ethnical Resistance and Solidarity Day and all our kinsmen who struggled.
