Gümülcine Municipality honors women in all their roles on International Women’s Day
The event, held on the evening of March 8 at the Cultural Movement venue in Gümülcine, attracted a large audience and was jointly organized by the Municipality of Komotini, the Municipal Equality Committee, and the Municipal Regional Theatre of Gümülcine.
Cultural Tribute Highlighting Women’s Voices
Deputy Mayor for Culture Natasa Liveriadou welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of recognizing the meaning of International Women’s Day, not only through women’s initiatives but also through the participation and support of men.
The tribute program was curated by Sofia Meneselidou and featured a series of literary readings and reflections performed by local participants, including:

Music Performances and Powerful Symbolism
The event also included two musical tributes. Pianist Sakis Vargemtzidis performed alongside singer Despoina Argyriadou, delivering a musical segment dedicated to women.
Another emotional moment came from the Choir of the Music School of Gümülcine, conducted by Anna Pavrianidou. During their performance, the choir members appeared on stage wearing red scarves covering their mouths, symbolizing silence and violence against women. The performance concluded with a piece dedicated to women who have lost their lives to gender-based violence.
Honorary Recognition for Social Contribution
At the conclusion of the event, the municipality presented a symbolic award to Eirini Stavridou in recognition of her long-standing social contribution and community engagement.
Local officials noted that the event aimed not only to celebrate women’s achievements but also to raise awareness about ongoing challenges related to equality and gender-based violence.
Gümülcine marked International Women’s Day with a cultural event honoring women’s roles in society through literature, music, and symbolic performances highlighting gender equality and social awareness.
