The Gümülcine Municipality’s Department of Social Policy, together with the Women’s Shelter, will organize a series of events aimed at raising awareness about violence against women.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 17 December 1999. Despite the years that have passed, violence against women and girls remains a global concern. In addition to rising femicide rates, the digital age has introduced increasing risks of online harassment.

As part of this year’s observance, Gümülcine Municipality and the Women’s Shelter will hold two awareness-raising events on 25 November.

Open Literary Event

In collaboration with the Municipal Library and the 3rd Experimental Lyceum, an event open to the public will take place at 11:00 at the Municipal Library.

Titled “The Role of Literature as Mirror and Refuge: The Social and Psychological Dimensions of Violence Against Women,” the event will explore multiple facets of gender-based violence through literary works. Discussions will focus on both the social roots of violence and the psychological impacts experienced by women.

Policy4Equality Project Presentation

The second event will be held at 18:00 at the Georgios Pavlidis (former Prefecture) Conference Hall, in cooperation with AMKE Synapses.

The session will introduce “Policy4Equality: Learning from Local Experts, Planning for the Future.” The project highlights the importance of cooperation among local institutions in preventing gender-based violence and improving intervention mechanisms in the Rhodope region. The presentation will feature organizations contributing to the research, as well as local structures actively involved in combating gender-based violence and the services they provide.
