Eastern Macedonia and Thrace targets Scandinavian Tourism Market with Malmö showcase

Greece’s Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) region is intensifying its international tourism strategy by targeting the Scandinavian market, participating for the second time in a business-to-business (B2B) event in Malmö.

The regional delegation, coordinated by Deputy Governor for Tourism Panayiotis Arhontis, met with more than 50 tourism agencies and journalists from Sweden and Denmark to showcase the area’s tourism potential.

Promoting Alternative Tourism
During the presentation program, officials highlighted the region’s natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse alternative tourism opportunities—including eco-tourism, gastronomy, and cultural routes.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to position Eastern Macedonia and Thrace as a year-round destination capable of meeting the evolving preferences of Northern European travelers, who are increasingly seeking less conventional and more experience-driven destinations.

Strong Interest from Nordic Market
One-on-one meetings held after the presentations allowed stakeholders to assess demand trends among Scandinavian travelers. Participants emphasized that the region’s varied tourism offerings are well aligned with the growing interest in new and less crowded destinations.

Officials noted that the Nordic market represents a strategic opportunity due to its high spending capacity and interest in sustainable and authentic travel experiences.

Ongoing International Promotion
Authorities confirmed that international promotional activities will continue in the coming months. As part of this strategy, a similar tourism event is planned in Istanbul ahead of the Easter holiday period, aiming to further expand the region’s visibility in key markets.

The EMT region’s outreach signals Greece’s broader push to diversify its tourism base beyond traditional destinations and attract new visitor segments across Europe.
