Demographics as an issue of major importance for Greece was highlighted by the conference organized last Friday and Saturday by the Municipality of Xanthi in collaboration with the Institute of Local Self-Government (ITA) of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) and the Regional Union of Municipalities of Eastern Macedonia - Thrace ( PED AMTH).
The continuous decline of the population, the aging of society and the migration of young people abroad pose serious risks to social and economic cohesion. In this context, Local Government has an important role to play, such as initiatives to support families.
The highlight of the two-day conference was the presentation of ITA's scientific research on the demographic issue which revealed valuable evidence and realistic and workable policies to address it. The mayor of Xanthi,
Stratos Kontos, underlined the seriousness of the situation, pointing out that immediate and targeted actions are required. "There is no doubt that demographics is one of the biggest challenges of our time. We need to be more flexible, more innovative and more efficient. To find ways to strengthen social cohesion, to motivate young people to stay and develop their skills in our country but also to offer quality services to the elderly so that they can live with dignity and safety."
