Speaking during the visit, Chrysochoidis said the fence had withstood recent severe flooding and had also functioned as a barrier that helped limit damage in the area. He added that the project would now enter a new construction phase aimed at closing existing gaps along the border.

According to the minister, additional sections of the fence will begin construction in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce Greece’s land border with Türkiye. He stated that the project will continue in line with national security planning to ensure full coverage of the Meriç frontier.

Chrysochoidis also emphasized the role of security forces stationed along the border, including the Hellenic Police and armed forces, saying they work daily to protect national territory using modern equipment and surveillance systems.

He noted that migration flows in the area have remained low, attributing this both to reduced pressure from the Turkish side and to strengthened border monitoring and enforcement.

The minister further highlighted plans to enhance border security services not only in Meriç but also in secondary operational zones across regions such as Rhodope, İskeçe, and Kavala, aiming to secure the entire northern frontier and major transit routes including the Egnatia corridor.
