Beware of snow and ice! Where are snow chains mandatory?

On Monday, January 13, 2025, the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Police Department issued a warning for drivers regarding snow and ice on the roads.
Due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions, the use of snow chains has been mandated in certain areas of Xanthi and Rhodope Prefectures. Authorities strongly advise against traveling unless absolutely necessary and recommend keeping snow chains in vehicles at all times.
Where Are Snow Chains Mandatory?
XANTHI PREFECTURE
On the Xanthi-Bulgaria border road, from the 14th kilometer to Şahin village.
From the 31st kilometer of the same road to the Bulgarian border.
On municipal and forest roads between Kallithea Stavroupolis and Hamidiye Forest Village (Dasiko Horio), where icy conditions allow only vehicles with chains to pass.
RHODOPE PREFECTURE
Roads between Kozdere, Hemetli, Çalabı, Musacık, Hacıören, Gerdeme, Keziren, and Hebilköy.
From the 2nd kilometer of the Baldıran-Derbent road, heavy snowfall and ice require vehicles to use chains.
The Karamusa crossing is closed due to rising water levels.
ALEXANDROUPOLI
Roads along the Cirmen-Bulgaria border are closed due to insufficient snow-clearing efforts and hazardous weather conditions.
In the Evros region, carrying snow chains in vehicles is mandatory on all roads.
