Türkan Feyzullah, a 1.5-year-old who lost her life in her mother’s arms during the forced assimilation efforts in Bulgaria in 1984, was commemorated in a ceremony held in Edirne. The event took place at the Türkan Baby Park in Şükrüpaşa Neighborhood, where wreaths were laid at her monument.

Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer, speaking at the ceremony, highlighted the profound suffering endured in the Balkan region, emphasizing that innocent children and the elderly were often the primary victims of such tragedies. He described Türkan Baby as a symbol of the oppression faced during that time and stressed the importance of learning from past mistakes.

Edirne Mayor Filiz Gencan Akın condemned the attack on Türkan Baby as an assault on human dignity, describing her as a representative of a nation resisting the denial of its identity, language, and culture.

Bulgarian representatives at the ceremony reminded attendees that assimilation efforts in Bulgaria began well before 1984 and underlined the importance of remembering martyrs like Türkan Baby.

The event concluded with a poetry recital and the laying of carnations at the Türkan Baby Monument. Participants expressed hopes for a future filled with peace and harmony.
