Restoration nears completion for Balıklı Greek Hospital
The restoration of Balıklı Greek Hospital's Geriatrics Building, damaged in the August 4, 2022 fire, is approaching completion, with the exterior facade and roof now fully restored. Located in Kazlıçeşme, the building dates back to 1894 and is part of one of Türkiye's oldest hospitals, originally established by decree of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror shortly after the conquest of Istanbul.
The restoration has focused on preserving the building’s historical character, with fire-resistant materials replacing wooden sections that suffered extensive damage. As of now, 95% of the electrical work, 70% of the ceramic tiling, and parts of the plumbing are complete. Heating installations are also underway.
Balıklı Greek Hospital Foundation President Konstantin Yuvanidis expressed gratitude for government support and emphasized the challenges posed by rising costs. Despite these financial hurdles, the restoration continues gradually, aiming to bring the hospital back to full functionality while preserving its historical essence.
