Freedom of press and expression

Freedom of press in Western Thrace is continuously violated through intimidation and vigorous fiscal and legal controls.

The local media has been supressed for years throughout the supressing policy of the Greek State. No single month passes without a journalist from the minority newspapers being summoned to a police station or a tax office, or faced with a judicial inquiry on trivial grounds. These cases demonstrate a crystal clear example on suppression of freedom of speech in Western Thrace.

In particular, Millet is one of the most suffered newspapers from the strict policies of the state. Since the day the newspaper was founded, it has been facing both hundreds of thousands of compensation convictions and imprisonments. In another recent development, "Millet" was convicted to 64.000 euro of compensation, which is well beyond the financial capacity and the writers to 15-month imprisonment.
