Aston Villa F.C. claimed the UEFA Europa League title on Wednesday with a dominant 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the final at Istanbul’s Tupras Stadium.

Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers secured Villa’s first European trophy in 43 years and the club’s first-ever Europa League crown.

Tielemans opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a powerful first-time finish from Rogers’ cross before Buendia doubled the lead in stoppage time of the first half with a curling strike into the far corner. Rogers sealed the win in the 58th minute after converting Buendia’s low cross from close range.

Managed by Unai Emery, Aston Villa controlled the match throughout to end a decades-long wait for major silverware. The victory also gave Emery a record fifth Europa League title after previous triumphs with Sevilla and Villarreal.

“This club, the players and the supporters all deserve this,” Emery said after the match. “If there is a king of this competition, then we are all kings together.”

The final was attended by Prince William, who celebrated Villa’s goals from the stands alongside thousands of English supporters.

Freiburg coach Julian Schuster praised Aston Villa’s performance and admitted his side struggled to recover after conceding twice before halftime.

Villa captain John McGinn lifted the trophy during the post-match ceremony as Queen’s “We Are the Champions” played around the stadium.

English clubs maintain perfect record in UEFA finals held in Istanbul

English teams continued their strong record in UEFA finals hosted in Istanbul after Aston Villa F.C. defeated SC Freiburg to win the Europa League title on Wednesday.

Istanbul has now hosted five UEFA finals, with English clubs emerging victorious in four of them. The city has staged two UEFA Champions League finals, two Europa League finals and one UEFA Super Cup final.

Liverpool F.C. won both UEFA finals it played in Istanbul — the 2005 Champions League final and the 2019 UEFA Super Cup — while Manchester City F.C. lifted its first Champions League trophy in the city after defeating Inter in 2023.

The only UEFA final in Istanbul not involving an English side was the 2009 UEFA Cup final between Shakhtar Donetsk and Werder Bremen.

With Aston Villa’s latest appearance, English clubs also moved to the top of the all-time Europa League final appearances list with 20, overtaking Spanish teams, which have reached 19 finals. German clubs now have 16 final appearances following Freiburg’s run to this year’s showpiece.
