Spotify tops 300 million premium subscribers

Spotify ended the second quarter with 300 million premium subscribers, becoming the first audio streaming platform to reach the milestone.

The figure exceeded the company's guidance of 299 million and was up from 293 million at the end of the first quarter.

Monthly active users rose to 777 million from 761 million three months earlier, narrowly missing Spotify's forecast of 778 million. The company said subscriber and user growth was broad-based across all regions.

Revenue and profit improve

Second-quarter revenue increased 14% year-on-year to €4.8 billion, in line with company expectations, while operating income jumped 61% to €655 million, surpassing guidance.

Operating expenses rose 3%, driven by higher spending on marketing, cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

"Our business performed well in the second quarter, led by strength in subscribers and profitability," Spotify said in its earnings statement.

Outlook remains positive

Spotify forecast further growth in the third quarter, projecting 305 million premium subscribers, 788 million monthly active users, revenue of €5 billion and operating income of €670 million.

The company said it expects stronger growth and improved margins in 2026 as it continues investing in its long-term expansion.

Despite the record subscriber numbers and stronger profitability, Spotify shares fell more than 4% in pre-market trading as investors focused on margins following recent price increases and cost-cutting measures.
