Voridis from Chios: Government stays firm on migration reduction – Returns and decongestion remain top priorities

Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Makis Voridis reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing migration flows during his visit to Chios for the commemoration of the 1822 massacre. He noted that government policy is yielding results, citing a 27% decrease in arrivals in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

During his visit, Voridis toured the Closed Controlled Facility of Chios (VIAL), speaking with staff and receiving a detailed update on operational challenges. He also met with local representatives from Chalkios and had a formal meeting with Chios Mayor Ioannis Malafis.

Voridis emphasized that, even in his short 1.5-month tenure at the ministry, policies to reduce the number of residents in facilities are already paying off, with an average reduction of 12.9% in facility populations. He stressed:

"This policy remains firm. It is part of our government’s agenda, and we will continue to implement it."

He also reiterated that accelerating returns is a core governmental priority, while ensuring that migration facilities operate under safe conditions for both residents and locals. He stated:

"It is crucial that these structures ensure safety for everyone during their operation. Local communities under pressure from migration flows will continue to be supported, especially via the Solidarity Fund mechanism."

The Minister was accompanied by:

  • Secretary General of Migration Policy Manos Logothetis,
  • Secretary General of Reception and Identification Dimitris Glymis,
  • Director of Technical Services Aristeidis Matiatos.
