UN calls on Greece to prevent torture of detainees

Following a visit from October 6-17, during which SPT experts inspected prisons, psychiatric institutions, and detention centers in Greece, a statement was issued stressing the need for Greece to bolster its efforts in safeguarding these individuals. The committee emphasized the importance of ensuring that the national prevention mechanism plays an effective role.

The UN Subcommittee is expected to present a confidential report to the Greek government with observations and recommendations on preventing torture. Greece was also encouraged to make this report public.

SPT Chair Anica Tomsic acknowledged Greece's challenges in dealing with migration and economic issues but highlighted the urgent need for further actions to prevent torture and improve the protection of detainees’ rights. Tomsic called for immediate steps to address deficiencies in this area.
