Greece signs international declaration supporting media freedom and information integrity
Greece has joined a group of countries endorsing the Declaration on Multilateral Action for Information Integrity and Independent Media, an initiative announced by the French presidency aimed at strengthening global cooperation in defense of free and reliable information.
The declaration was signed by France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Ghana, Greece, and several other nations from Europe, South America, Africa, and beyond.
According to the French presidency, the participating governments have pledged to bolster multilateral efforts to safeguard information integrity and support independent journalism, amid increasing challenges from misinformation, disinformation, polarization, and hate speech.
The declaration underlined that independent media play a vital role in countering disinformation and stressed the need for public and institutional support to sustain trustworthy journalism. It also warned that emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, pose new risks by facilitating the rapid spread of false information.
The signatories reaffirmed their commitment to human rights and information integrity principles under United Nations frameworks and other international initiatives, calling for stronger coordination among global institutions that promote media freedom.
They also expressed support for the creation of the International Fund for Public Interest Media, a multilateral mechanism designed to finance and assist free and independent journalism worldwide.
