Two dead, five injured after truck crashes into toll station
According to reports, the crash occurred around 4 p.m. at the Polymylos toll plaza on the Egnatia Highway, when a truck slammed into vehicles waiting at the toll booths. The truck then hit a protective barrier before crashing into the toll station booth, triggering a fire.
According to ERT, the victims were passengers in the first two vehicles struck by the truck.
Fire department units and emergency responders rushed to the scene. Two of the injured were transported to the Veria General Hospital, while three others with minor injuries were taken to the Kozani Hospital.
Several vehicles were trapped at the toll station due to the incident. Witnesses said thick fog blanketed the area at the time of the crash.
The truck driver was arrested and will undergo toxicological testing. A preliminary investigation is underway to determine the exact causes and circumstances of the crash.
According to the police, traffic from Veria to Kozani is being diverted through Kastania via the old national road.
