Trial of Konstantinos Plevris for Nazi salute postponed

The trial of Konstantinos Plevris, the lawyer who represented former MEP Yiannis Lagos of the now-disbanded Golden Dawn party, for making a Nazi salute in court has been postponed until September 24.

The defendant requested the postponement, claiming that his lawyer was afraid to appear in court “because of anarchists.” His statement provoked a reaction from the audience, prompting the prosecutor to ask whether he expected conditions to be different at the next hearing.

Plevris, who faces charges of public incitement to violence or hatred by a public official, responded that he would hire new legal counsel before the next hearing to avoid such issues.

Despite the prosecutor’s objection, the court president granted the postponement.

Plevris, a veteran far-right figure, performed the Nazi salute during an appeal by convicted Golden Dawn members in October 2022, leading to his permanent disbarment from the Athens Bar Association.

He is the father of Health Minister Thanos Plevris, who has publicly condemned his actions.
