The story of Kavala cookies featured on TRT
The origin story of the world-famous Kavala Cookie was brought to television audiences in a special report aired on TRT, featuring an exclusive interview with Prodromos Iosifidis, a native of Kavala. The report explored the cookie’s historical background and the production tradition passed down through generations.
In the interview, Iosifidis emphasized that the Kavala Cookie is not merely a dessert, but a cultural heritage reflecting the life stories of families who migrated from Türkiye to Greece during the population exchange. He explained that his family’s migration journey from Türkiye to Kavala became a key source of inspiration for both the recipe and the production tradition.
Iosifidis noted that the Kavala Cookie, made with almonds, flour, and butter, has gained international recognition over the years, while production has continued without compromising the traditional recipe. He added that the recipe traces back to his grandmother, who migrated from Güzelyurt district of Aksaray.
TRT’s special report also detailed the transformation of the Kavala Cookie from a small family workshop into a delicacy recognized across many European countries.
The interview highlighted once again that the Kavala Cookie represents not only a gastronomic product, but also a bridge between the past and the present, carrying memory, migration, and cultural continuity within its simple ingredients.
