Sky Express expands Athens-Istanbul connection with direct flights
Sky Express inaugurated flights between Athens and Istanbul as of Tuesday (Nov. 12), with the first flight landing at IGA Istanbul Airport on the European side, where passengers were met by officials of the Greek consulate, the CEO and officials of the Turkish airport, and a representative of the Turkish tourism organization 'Go Turkiye'.
Yiannis Grylos, founder and president of Sky Express, which is based in Greece, was among the passengers. The new flight reflects the increased tourism and trade exchanges between Greece and Turkiye as a result of improved bilateral relations.
At the event held at the IGA Instanbul Airport, Grylos said that flights between Athens and Istanbul would be daily, and that the company was looking into increasing the number of flights as well as running other direct flights with Turkiye, particularly to the Greek islands, as the company has a large network of domestic destinations. "This will improve relations between the two countries as well and allow better communications between the two countries," he said.
On his side, IGA Istanbul Airport CEO Selahattin Bilgen said that the Greek airline, which had 5 million passengers in 2024, is the 110th to be landing at the specific airport and is two airlines away from surpassing the first airport globally. (IGA Instanbul was voted first on 'The World's Best 10 International Airports' list in 2024 by 'Travel + Leisure' readers.)
