Protest in Syntagma Square over Israeli raid on solidarity Flotilla

Hundreds of protesters gathered late Tuesday night outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later at Syntagma Square, in front of the Greek Parliament, to condemn the Israeli military’s raid on the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Demonstrators, including citizens of all ages and various activist groups, denounced what they described as an illegal operation in international waters, during which Israeli forces seized the vessels, abducted crew members, and severed communications.

The protest, which began at 11:00 p.m., was marked by strong chants and banners. The slogan "Victory to the Intifada – Freedom for Palestine" echoed throughout the square, while signs called for an end to what participants labeled as genocide in Gaza and criticized the Greek government's cooperation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Protesters demanded that Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis take immediate diplomatic action to ensure the safe release of the flotilla’s crew members. They also called for sanctions against the Israeli government and armed forces for what they described as crimes against international law and ongoing atrocities against the Palestinian people.

In addition, demonstrators urged the Greek government to sever all ties and suspend any dealings with the Netanyahu administration, calling for the immediate recognition of a Palestinian state.

The gathering reflected a broader wave of public outrage over Israel’s actions in Gaza and the perceived erosion of international law. Protesters expressed their refusal to remain silent in the face of what they called a humanitarian and legal crisis.
