Police announce enhanced road safety measures for Carnival and Clean Monday holiday
Hellenic Police have announced enhanced road safety measures ahead of the Carnival and Clean Monday holiday period, with increased controls in place from 20 to 23 February.
Key elements of Police's plan include:
⦁ Policing of the road network, tailored to the specific traffic conditions of each region.
⦁ Increased police deployment at sections of the road network with a high incidence of traffic collisions.
⦁ Enhanced traffic controls at entry and exit points of major urban centres, where vehicle flows are expected to be particularly heavy.
⦁ Traffic regulation by officers at key junctions to prevent congestion.
⦁ Traffic management measures in areas hosting festive events.
⦁ Increased policing at locations with high passenger throughput, including airports, ports and railway stations.
⦁ The attendance of traffic officers at toll stations nationwide to facilitate vehicle flow, provide information and offer advice to drivers and passengers.
To improve road safety and ease congestion, a temporary ban will apply to heavy goods vehicles with a payload exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
For outbound traffic, the restriction will be in force on Friday from 16:00 to 21:00 and on Saturday from 08:00 to 13:00. For inbound traffic, the restriction will apply on Monday from 15:00 to 21:00.
