“People’s rally” EMT urges Governor Topsidis to address bridge safety risks
The “Laïki Syspirosi” (People’s Rally) of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has raised alarm over the condition of bridges across the region, including both smaller ones on provincial roads and larger structures, warning that they pose a constant threat to the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
In a statement, the group criticized the neglect of critical infrastructure—ranging from fire protection and anti-seismic measures to flood prevention and road safety—arguing that maintenance and upgrades are treated as a “cost,” while millions are granted in subsidies and tax breaks to large business groups.
The statement called on Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis to visit the deteriorating bridges on the island of Thassos, particularly in Theologos, and provide clear answers regarding:
Immediate restoration of significant damage to bridges in Thassos and across the region.
Comprehensive structural integrity and safety inspections.
A scientific study of all bridges in the region, based on modern data and technology, addressing both present and future needs—including increased traffic, tourism, and infrastructure usage. This should form part of an integrated transport study.
Pressure on the government to finally establish a national bridge registry.
The statement was signed by regional councilor Dionysis Kladis on behalf of the “People’s Rally.”
