Parliament receives case file against Charitsis over traffic disruption charges

A case file has been forwarded to the Greek Parliament concerning Alexis Haritsis, leader of the New Left party, over charges of obstructing public transportation. The charges stem from his February 2025 visit to farmers' roadblocks during nationwide agricultural protests.

In a public statement, Charitsis declared:

“I will clearly request the lifting of my parliamentary immunity. It will be an honor to stand in court alongside the struggling farmers. We are not all the same.”

Haritsis accused the government of attempting to cover up the major OPEKEPE scandal and protect its ministers, positioning himself as being on “the opposite side — standing with those fighting for a better future for Greek agriculture.”

He also called on all political parties to take a clear stance on the matter:

“Not for me personally, but for the future of our country’s agricultural sector and the quality of our democracy.”

The opposition party SYRIZA quickly issued a statement supporting Haritsis, saying:

“Participation in protest movements — and especially the support of such actions by Members of Parliament — must not be criminalized.”
