Parliament ratifies Sweden and Finland NATO bid

The Greek parliament voted to accept Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership application on Thursday. The bill was supported by ruling New Democracy, principle opposition party SYRIZA, and opposition party PASOK.

During his speech in Parliament, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias underlined the strong support for the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO.

He also stressed that NATO must highlight its values framework which stipulates that transgression, the challenge to the sovereignty of an ally and friendly country’s territory, is outside the principles of the Alliance and not consistent with Article 5 of the Treaty.

“Thank you, Greece! With a strong majority the Greek parliament today voted in favor of ratifying Sweden’s accession to NATO,” said the Embassy of Sweden in Greece in a statement released on social media.
