Panathinaikos Ease to Greek Basketball Title
Panathinaikos eased past Promitheas at the OAKA Indoor Hall on Friday, thrashing their visitors 111-77 to win the Basket League title with a 3-0 score in the best-of-five finals.
For the Athens giants, this was the 38th time in history it won the league. This was also the first league title for NCAA legendary coach Rick Pitino on this side of the Atlantic.
The absence of Olympiacos, that has withdrawn from the Basket League in protest and got relegated to the A2 division last month, has made the finals very predictable, as Panathinaikos was a hot favorite from the start.
After the game, Pitino said he would consult with his family before committing himself to the second season in Greece.
“In New York, I will have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to speak to all my children,” said the American coach.
“If I can get them on board, I will return. If I can’t get them on all on board, then I won’t. It’s very simple. We are a very strong family. Like the Greek families. It’s got to be one for all and all for one.
